Remote’s work dark side

Posted on 02/05/202308/05/2023

Despite efforts by some prominent CEOs to prohibit it, remote work is likely to remain in the workforce.

Remote Work

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that employees working from the office can create new products. The remote work model creates more confusion. According to ‘India Today Tech’, he mentioned that we still don’t have the technology for people to go fully remote.

Altman describes it as an experiment, who previously stated his preference for working from home. As he put it:

“One of the worst mistakes the tech industry had done was believing that everyone could go full remote forever. That startups didn’t need to be together. There would be no loss of creativity.

I’d say the experiment is over, and the technology isn’t yet good enough for people to be fully remote forever, especially on startups.”

Elon Musk has ended Twitter’s “work from anywhere policy”. Bob Iger has stopped short of an office mandate when returning to Disney as chief executive. The most common remote work situation in the United States is now hybrid work. The employees are spending some days in the office and some working remotely.

Furthermore he adds that OpenAI’s some of the best talents are working remotely. He said:

“Some of our best people are remote, and we will continue to support it always, (…) may nothing stop you from applying to OpenAI! I don’t like the open air fentanyl markets either.”

Discussing about the importance of working from office for a startup, Altman noted:

“The more unclear and early the product is, the more in-person time the team needs to grind together,”

Τhe future of AI

According to Altman, AI needs to be treated with “extreme seriousness” as the tech might have “existential risk”. The ‘Godfather of AI’ , Geoffrey Hinton resigned from Google this week. He blew the whistle on AI, the technology he helped developing. Important is to talk freely about potential dangers of AI, without having Google attached to it.

During a question-and-answer session at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Digital 2023 conference, Hinton said he has changed his mind about how AI technology works. Now, AI systems can be much more intelligent than humans and are better learners. He expressed concern about the risks of AI technology and its misuse by criminals and other wrongdoers.

Reuters recently reported that The White House will host CEOs of top artificial intelligence companies. It is necessary to discuss risks and safeguards of AI. Alphabet Inc, Google and Microsoft are at the first place
